A megfelelő irány pedig Jeruzsálem. Ezért alakult úgy, hogy a legtöbb zsinagóga tóraszekrénye Jeruzsálem (esetleg kelet) felé néz. Ugyanakkor az imádkozás helyes idejeit a bölcsek több más tényezőre vezették vissza, amelyek kijelöléséhez természetükből fakadóan leginkább csillagászati számításokra van szükség.

Hol is lakik most a maszorti péntek esténként?

“Dr Nessi Pál háromemeletes lakóháza a régi pesti zsidó negyed egyik legkisebb, 15/15 méteres telkén áll. Az épület az első, 1905-ös terv szerint csak kétemeletes lett volna, de véül az egy évvel későbbi, műteremszinttel kiegészített tervet valósították meg. A megrendelő mindkét esetben Dr. Nessi Pál, ismert, jómódú budapesti ügyvéd volt, többek között az Uránia Magyar Tudományos Színház Rt. felügyelőbizottságának tagja. Feltehető, hogy nem ez volt az egyetlen bérháza. (Az viszont biztos, hogy Balatonföldváron, egy hétezer négyzetméteres ősfás, vízparti parkban két olyan villa áll, melynek építtető tulajdonosa ő volt. Az 1896 és 1906 között épült gyönyörű házakat ma is Nessi-villa néven ismerik.) 

A rendkívül kis alapméretű, szintenként két kisméretű, komfortos lakással épült ház a zsinagóga közelségéből fakadóan megkülönböztetett helyzetű, de a tört vonalú utca miatt már elkészültekor hangsúlyos helyzetbe került. Az L alakú épület jól illeszkedik az utca arányaihoz és a szomszédos épületek kisvárosias léptékéhez. Akaratlanul is illeszkedik a később épült zsinagóga keleties világához, bár a homlokzat romantikus-móros diszítéseinek egy része ma már hiányzik.

A teljes felületen finoman nútolt, részben csúcsíves, részben egyenes, illetve félköríves záródású páros falnyílásokkal tagolt, neoromantikus homlokzat a földszinti falnyílások jellegzetes formája, ritmusa miatt emlékeztet a Síp utca 11. szám alatti, szintén Kende Ignác tervezte bérházra. A műteremszint a kort meghazudtolva modern megoldáú. Nem tudjuk, vajon miért változott meg egy év leforgása alatt az eredeti terv. Kinek épülhetett a műterem?

Az előtér és a lépcsőház oldalfalán a diszítőfestés helyenként még összefüggő nyomai láthatók. Az igényes kialakítású, íves vörösmészkő lépcső a helyhiány miatt húzott fokokkal, pihenő nélkül készült. A két komfortos polgári lakás ugyan a függőfolyosókról közelíthető meg, de szobái az utcára néznek. A függőfolyosó már nem eredeti, átépítették, korlátját kicserélték. Az udvar a rendkívül kis méretek ellenére sem sötét, ma még egy régi fölszintes épületből megmaradt kőfal zárja le.

A szomszédságban zajló építkezés remélhetően nem fogja a csöppnyi udvart örökre elzárni a napfénytől.
